Last year, I was lucky enough to design the book, Shoegasm for Race Point Publishing with The Book Shop, Ltd. It was pages and pages and pages of amazing shoes by amazing artists and designers. This year, I got to work with these assets and make the Shoegasm 2014 Calendar. Now…shoe envy for every month of the year!
I love working digitally. I pride myself on my virtually paper-free desk and workflow. But some photoshop work warrants paper and ink to make sure everything is perfect. This purse (yes, it’s a purse) needed a new background and reflective surface to sit on. A few hours of clipping, blurring, burnishing and masking later … this single piece of paper tells me it was a morning well-spent.
We’re just a few days before wrapping up The Art of the Handbag: Crazy Beautiful Bags with Race Point Publishing. Here’s a little peek at one of the featured designers, Dafne Balatsos. This might be my favorite bag in the book. Sometimes, the best part of designing a book like this is being buried in amazing photography from the features bag designers!
Be on the lookout for more photography and some sample pages from the book.
The Art of the Handbag is a companion book to last year’s Shoegasm.
After putting on a few finishing touches on Anatomy of Steampunk, I’m posting a few of my favorite pages. Ssshhh, I might be posting more favorite pages in a couple of days. Of the books I designed this year, this one may be my favorite. Of course, a client recently reminded my that I probably say that about a book every season.
Keep an eye out this Fall for Anatomy of Steampunk, written by Katherine Gleason and published by Race Point Publishing.
Putting the final design touches on Anatomy of Steampunk today. SO MUCH photoshop work went into this one, I just had to put together a few test sheets of art. Just a tiny sampling of the jewels and keys and gears and pearls and monocles from the pages of this gem, written by Katherine Gleason and published by Race Point Publishing.
Oh, the results of the art test…a-ok! Looking good! My inner art nerd is feeling rewarded for my late nights making clipping paths and blurring my edges…just enough!
More to come…look for some sample spreads in a bit!
I count myself among the many Grace Coddington fans who didn’t even know who she was until watching The September Issue. But I can tell you that I was charmed instantly. So far, just a couple chapters in, I’m equally charmed by her memoir.
This is a really exciting one! Here’s another upcoming release from Race Point Publishing and The Book Shop, Ltd. Anatomy of Steampunk will dissect the subculture that marries fashion and technology, and I can’t wait. The manuscript is still in the works, but the art’s coming together. It’s gonna be a beaut!
Note: These concepts spreads are rough. Keep an eye out for the real deal!
Here’s a sneak peek at The Art of the Handbag that I’m art directing and designing with The Book Shop, Ltd. for Race Point Publishing. Similar to last season’s Shoegasm, Handbag is a mind-bending collection of purses as art!
A couple of months after book designers release files to print, we get our hands on advance copies. It’s a moment-of-truth situation. No matter how sure you are that the books will be perfect, there’s a little something tugging at you until you can see them in person. You need to have them in your hands to make sure.
Today, when I stopped by The Book Shop, Ltd. office, I was greeted by this trio. So happy! So pleased! They were beautiful! The embossing, the varnishes, the metallic inks! I can’t wait to take my copies home!
When the world lost McQueen, we lost a true visionary. This is precisely what drew me to this fantastic project with Race Point Publishing and The Book Shop, Ltd. From the first day of cover concepts and sample spreads, I knew I wanted to go with a decidedly classic, clean and uncluttered aesthetic to let McQueen’s mind-bending creations do the heavy lifting. I wanted to treat the amazing runway images as if they were art pieces on a gallery wall. And let’s face it, McQueen’s gowns shouldn’t be treated as anything but art.
Alexander McQueen: Evolution is due out this Fall. CANNOT WAIT!
