It’s a Glam Thing, You See.
Last season, I had the fortune to work on this completely fun book of nail art by celebrity manicurist, Amber Stores. For Glam Nail Studio (produced by my pal Catbird Productions/Kirsten Hall and published by Race Point Publishing) I wasn’t the designer, but the one who photographed the step-by-step images throughout the book. GNS was recently featured in Nail Pro Magazine.

I have a crush on an album cover.
Say what you will about Bjork and her airport antics and red carpet … moments. Take or leave her insanely “specific” music. But one thing that can’t be argued is how beautiful and original her album covers are. The cover of Biophilia spins me around and flips me upside down every time I see it. The soft dreamy hair and fashion against the razor sharp celestial art motif is mesmerizing. Also, her belt is a harp. Come on! That’s awesome!

McQueen Moment!

Anyone who knows me, can tell you I’ve been a die-hard Grace Jones fan since I was a kid. In recent years, I’ve been in awe of Philip Treacy’s brilliant hats. So, naturally this clip and these pictures have me a little weak in the knees right now!

Recently, Grace and Philip arrived at West Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont with a copy of Alexander McQueen: Evolution in hand. Last year, I art directed and designed this 216-page book chronicling the runway moments and career of Alexander McQueen. Written by Katherine Gleason and published by Race Point Publishing, this book will always be one of my favorite projects.

I hope Grace and Philip are loving it too!

Clipped.
I love working digitally. I pride myself on my virtually paper-free desk and workflow. But some photoshop work warrants paper and ink to make sure everything is perfect. This purse (yes, it’s a purse) needed a new background and reflective surface to sit on. A few hours of clipping, blurring, burnishing and masking later … this single piece of paper tells me it was a morning well-spent.

Hey, that’s a sharp-lookin’ handbag!
We’re just a few days before wrapping up The Art of the Handbag: Crazy Beautiful Bags with Race Point Publishing. Here’s a little peek at one of the featured designers, Dafne Balatsos. This might be my favorite bag in the book. Sometimes, the best part of designing a book like this is being buried in amazing photography from the features bag designers!
Be on the lookout for more photography and some sample pages from the book.
The Art of the Handbag is a companion book to last year’s Shoegasm.

Freeze Frame

Watching In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye on HBO. I’m blown away. Addictive doc about the creative and editorial voices behind the photography….the art on the page of Vogue.

Anatomy of Steampunk

After putting on a few finishing touches on Anatomy of Steampunk, I’m posting a few of my favorite pages. Ssshhh, I might be posting more favorite pages in a couple of days. Of the books I designed this year, this one may be my favorite. Of course, a client recently reminded my that I probably say that about a book every season.

Keep an eye out this Fall for Anatomy of Steampunk, written by Katherine Gleason and published by Race Point Publishing.

CLIPPING PATHS OF STEAMPUNK
Putting the final design touches on Anatomy of Steampunk today. SO MUCH photoshop work went into this one, I just had to put together a few test sheets of art. Just a tiny sampling of the jewels and keys and gears and pearls and monocles from the pages of this gem, written by Katherine Gleason and published by Race Point Publishing.
Oh, the results of the art test…a-ok! Looking good! My inner art nerd is feeling rewarded for my late nights making clipping paths and blurring my edges…just enough!
More to come…look for some sample spreads in a bit!
