A True Geekout Moment.

As a true fan and admirer or technology and innovation, I geek out a lot these days. Today, I’ve switched to a new email software. This hardly seems like something to be excited about. But, I am. I am completely in love with Postbox 3. It’s compact, slick and powerful…and I’m a sucker for these polished, 3-d application icons.

Monster on a date.

So, this sketch has been hanging around for a few weeks. I’ve been itching to get to this guy, but loads of work got in the way. Finally, I got to bring the dapper dude to life tonight. He’s got a crooked smile, a lovely bouquet, a box of chocolates and gold spotted horns. This furry Casanova’s gonna get his gal!

When I was at Disney Publishing, Disney Hyperion published a beautiful, Cynthia Rylant authored, Jen Corace illustrated edition of Hansel and Gretel. Ever since, I’ve been a Corace fan!

He really never fails, does he?

So, I pulled this off my shelf a couple of times this week. As incredibly simple as it is, this is one of my all-time favorite book covers. The color, the line art, the type. All of it’s perfect. This cover is the perfect reminder to not overwork a design. Less really is more sometimes.

Take Flight!

Last week, I had an uncharacteristically Sci-Fi moment…and I’m really enjoying it. While I claim to not be the “Sci-Fi type,” I just might be. I had a blasty blast with this. It’s also aged up a bit form the illos that I’ve been creating, which was fun to try out. Here’s a sketch and the “finished” product. (finished in quotation marks because it’s a test and a work in progress.) More to come!

Apparently the illustration business is tougher than I thought. My newest client (Brooke, age 4) and I are off to a shaky start. At the end of our “meeting” last night, she left me with the directive, “Tim, next time you come to my house, draw what I say.” It was tough to hear, but I really do appreciate direct and honest feedback from clients.

So happy, I’m in the clouds.

The previously mentioned budding artist K. Kelly seems to have enjoyed my take on Rapunzel. The thing is…I’m not sure who’s inspired who here.

If you know me you know that nothing makes me happier than kids enjoying and creating art. So you can only imagine my reaction when this little gem appeared in my inbox.

A good friend, and star 2nd grader K. Kelly created this piece at school that was so well received that it appeared in a VERY special exhibition!

Also, who doesn’t love images of Autumn rendered in crayon?

Step one…back to basics.

I know I have mentioned this before, and recently. But a major personal win for me as I build my illustration portfolio is the fact that I’m drawing again. In this case, it’s a sketch to set me up for my next digital “illo”. I’d all but forgotten how amazingly therapeutic and rewarding it is to simply take pencil to paper and make something. I may not always like what I’m drawing. It may not always come out the way I had pictured. But it’s always mine…I made it.

In this case, I know exactly what the next step is and I can’t wait to do it. Keep an eye out. My narwhal obsession will be further realized this weekend.

A friend of mine from my Disney days posted this on FB tonight. Her 9-year old son is tearin’ it up with a paintbrush these days. I’m inspired for two reasons. It’s really a fantastic creation. But also…there’s not much out there more inspiring than a kid who is serious about art. Lovely. Keep up the good work, G!
