Sometimes to draw kids books you need to think and eat like a kid first :)
My new book Baxter The Twoofing Dog is coming out this May from Blue Apple Books! It’s the first one both drawn and written by yours truly (with a...

Business Insider came by for some photos of the office. Take a look!
If you know me you know that nothing makes me happier than kids enjoying and creating art. So you can only imagine my reaction when this little gem appeared in my inbox.
A good friend, and star 2nd grader K. Kelly created this piece at school that was so well received that it appeared in a VERY special exhibition!
Also, who doesn’t love images of Autumn rendered in crayon?
Step one…back to basics.
I know I have mentioned this before, and recently. But a major personal win for me as I build my illustration portfolio is the fact that I’m drawing again. In this case, it’s a sketch to set me up for my next digital “illo”. I’d all but forgotten how amazingly therapeutic and rewarding it is to simply take pencil to paper and make something. I may not always like what I’m drawing. It may not always come out the way I had pictured. But it’s always mine…I made it.
In this case, I know exactly what the next step is and I can’t wait to do it. Keep an eye out. My narwhal obsession will be further realized this weekend.
…and a smile.
A friend of mine from my Disney days posted this on FB tonight. Her 9-year old son is tearin’ it up with a paintbrush these days. I’m inspired for two reasons. It’s really a fantastic creation. But also…there’s not much out there more inspiring than a kid who is serious about art. Lovely. Keep up the good work, G!
Sure I spent a good portion of my day so far working with doodles of aardvarks and pigs, but in a little while I’ll shift gears. What other work would let me work on kids books all morning, then spend the afternoon immersed in the edgy world of Alexander McQueen? Here’s a little peep at some pages of the upcoming Alexander McQueen: Evolution book I have in the works. I love this work!
A couple of recent quick pieces that I’m really excited about as I am trying on my Illustrator hat.
Just my type.
Passing by the beautiful Barrymore Theatre, I was struck by the posters for the current run of Death of a Salesman. Sometimes a couple of bold colors and simple but beautiful are all you need. These posters, for lack of a better term, rock.
“Funky” barely begins to describe it!
For the past few months, I’ve been working with rainmaker, Kirsten Hall and illustration maven, Charlie Alder on this super-sized science experiments book for kids. This project for Hinkler Books has been a labor of love. And I mean love!
First of all, I love a book trailer. That will be evident in my many, many posted trailers to come. Here’s one for a book that a friend recently gave me for my birthday. If there’s anything cooler than this Blexbolex book, I do’t wanna know about it. I like keeping this book, People, on a pedestal. Check it.
This will always blow me away. No pun intended. But seriously, this is beautiful. If you haven’t seen this…take a minute.
McQueen.
I’ve been working on this amazing book project for the past couple of months. We’re combining elegant page design with photography of some the most daring fashions of our time. Cannot wait for my samples!!!! Alas, there’s lots more to do before we get there.
Another takeaway from brunch yesterday. It’s fitting that one of New York’s coolest tacos spots would have this sweet postcard. Good shot.
So, michael and I snuck out for a late brunch at La Esquina on Wythe in Williamsburg, Brooklyn…just a couple blocks from home base. This used to be the home of Relish Diner. Relish was a kitsch diner in the burgs which is much improved after its makeover as a diner style Mexican restaurant. FANTASTIC food.
Anyway, when you enter the joint, there’s a rack of magazines that you can bring to your table while you eat your food (in my case poached eggs with chorizo, bacon and a Corona).
Flipping through a Vanity Fair magazine, I kept stopping on this page. I have a design-crush on this page. The fonts, colors and photos create ‘awesomeness’. what you can’t see from this photo is the hairline halo around each letter in “FANFAIR” that adds this cool modern vibration around the decidedly art typeface choice. awesome…it’s an industry term.
